air conditioning unitsYour air conditioning system is a significant expense, and there’s no reason to spend more than you have to. A little knowledge will help you save. Here are some preventable, but very costly mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Getting the wrong unit for your property – Generally, people choose from either ducted or split system units. While both have their uses, do you know which one is right for your home? The wrong choice could end up costing you in both acquisition and energy bills.

  • Ducted System – According to ConductAirConditioning.com.au, these excel at cooling the entire house. They are also very quiet and energy efficient. But unless you get one that separates your house into “zones”, they aren’t ideal if you only need cooling in a few rooms of the house at a time.
  • Split System – Only need to cool a bedroom or two? Then the split system works well. Just make sure that you won’t have to keep buying multiple units in the future, otherwise you could end up spending far more than you would have with a ducted system.

2. Leaving it running unnecessarily –It’s easy to forget your HVAC system, and there are times when you might leave it running even when no one is in the house. This, however, greatly increases your energy bill and places unnecessary wear and tear on your unit.

Before you leave the home, do a thorough check and make sure that you didn’t leave your HVAC running. Eventually, it’ll become a habit.

3. Ignoring maintenance – While manufacturers try to make them as rugged and durable as possible, air conditioning systems are not infallible. They are complex pieces of machinery, and neglecting their maintenance sets you up for costly or difficult repairs in the long run. You might even have to replace the unit well before the expected end of its lifespan.

4. Turning the thermostat too far – Have a central air conditioning system? A common misconception is that turning your thermostat higher or lower than you actually want will make the system work faster. This isn’t the case; your system cools and heats at the same speed even if you overcompensate.

Most of the time, you will simply forget and leave it an uncomfortable temperature, while the system takes up unnecessary electricity. Just set the temperature to where you actually want it, and wait patiently.
